Why do children read comic books?
Unfortunately the first question of the 21st century is why don’t children love books anymore? Whose fault it is and what can we do about it? The main fault is the one of the parents who doesn’t take time for their children and leave the responsibility of raising them to the nannies or even worse to the TVs and computers. We are aware that the time is so short and you have to make a life for your child, a better life than you had, but don’t forget that you are the first and most important teacher and guide for his future. We, as parents are the ones who have to develop a love for the books.
Why is it so important for us to be there for our children and tell them stories and help them discover the magic world of the books? For an easy answer just think about your childhood when your mom and dad told you the nice stories of Cinderella, or Tinkerbell, or Beauty and the beast, or the adventures of Robin Hood and Peter Pan. Do you remember how you imagined their world and how easy things seemed? And how many dreams you’ve made and how your wings grew when you were listening to the happy endings. Wasn’t that the perfect time of the day? Weren’t you anxious to learn to read so you can have access to all the books in the library you heard about? Didn’t these moments create a perfect atmosphere for dreaming and growing?
I believe the answer to all these questions is for sure YES. So, if it’s yes why don’t we give the same chance to our children? The TV and computer can create a false image of the world. A brutal and dangerous world, where your dreams can become true only if you fight and eliminate the enemy. We need happy endings and we need a reason to make fun of life.
Yes, that’s why the children love comic books, because we need to make fun of life. There are many hard moments in life but we need to laugh of them so we can take them easier. And the children know that. They are so sensible and so pure and they know how to forgive and forget. They know that laughing is a secret to go on, it is a perfect “tool” to make friends and enjoy life. The comic books make them aware of these things. The characters are so funny and the action is so easy to follow. The endings are always happy and even if there’s an enemy and a looser, that’s not a tragedy. He always becomes a “nice guy” who makes you laugh.
Isn’t this a good reason to make them love books and even better to love comic books? Especially in these times when we forget to hope and smile. Let’s help our children to be face the world and life beyond them with a large smile on their faces and a good joke on their lips. And comic books can give them a clue about this.
